Movement Workshop

Class description:
A welcoming and creative movement experience for ages 10 and up! This community modern dance and improv class invites movers of all levels to explore movement, expression, and connection in a supportive environment. Class begins with a guided warm-up focused on strength, flexibility, and body awareness, followed by improvisation exercises that encourage creativity, confidence, and collaboration. Participants will also learn modern dance phrase work that builds coordination, musicality, and performance skills.
No dance experience required — just come ready to move, create, and have fun! Wear loose-fitting clothing and get ready to move.
Bio:
Maria Colaco is a dynamic dance artist, choreographer, and educator known for blending strong technique with bold creativity and expansive movement. Drawing from Limon and Horton techniques, her work incorporates floor work, breakdancing influences, and contemporary choreographic styles that inspire dancers to push artistic boundaries.
Maria earned her BFA in Dance Performance from University of South Florida and has performed and collaborated with internationally recognized artists including Britney Spears and Justin Timberlake. Her professional experience includes work with the Metropolitan Opera, Broadway and Off-Broadway productions, Battery Dance Festival, and Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS.
She has studied with the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater, Doug Varone, and leading downtown modern choreographers. Her choreography and performances have been presented at venues and festivals including the New York International Fringe Festival, Dance Theater Workshop, Triskelion Arts, New York Fashion Week, television, film, commercials, and Shakespeare in the Park. Her work has been described by NYTheatre as “confident, daring, and refreshingly unexpected.”
